We have meet with the DOT again to discuss safety and enhancements to Middle Country Rd.  We have good news we do have the DOT (Department of Transportation) coming back to Selden to do several changes to our portion of the Rd.   We will be giving you updates of what we expect to see. 

Each year we collect food for the Selden Centereach Youth Association food pantry.  We also will be collecting new toys and warm coats.  Please give what ever you can to help our community members in need. Thank you for you help this year we do have a great need and we need you assistance. thank you again....Family Farm House has had a fire.   We do not have much news yet but hope to have more answers of the damage soon.  We have reached out to the town to see if they may be willing to restore and repair the damages.  Assemblywoman Ginny Fields will also be attending to give us an update from the state.   

 On August 28th we had our Annual Selden Civic Family Pride Event-Movie Night in the Park-cartoons-movie started at sundown, at Liberty Park in Selden corner of Boyle Rd and Liberty Ave.   This evening went well and a good time was had by all.  Thanks for joining us we all enjoy the evening and the movie Kung Fu Panda.

We also will take this opportunity to Celebrate our Volunteers of the Year.  We would like to first announce that our winners are Robert Lindsey, volunteer and veteran, Bob has been a volunteer in our community for many years working with other veterans in our community and our county; his dedication to our Country makes us very proud that Bob is part of our civic. Next we are honoring, Kelly Klien, volunteer and teacher, working with the students to organize them to good civic citizens, involving them in meet the candidates night to learn the issues, to working on Hobb's Farm and always part of our clean ups, working in our community to enhance and improve.  Our last honoree is,  Matthew Sharp, our volunteer student/Go Green Club founder and his club for making such a great showing for our Brookhaven Clean up day.  These three individuals have made a difference in our community.  They have worked to improve and enhance all of our lives through there hard work.  We want to thank all of our volunteers for giving the gift of time but this year we will celebrate our honorees at our June 22 meeting.  Please spread the word.  We hope to see you at our Monday night.

 Thank you to our Suffolk Country Legislator, Brian Beedenbender, for he secured a $5,000 grant to go towards community enhancements. 

 SC Legislator Beedenbender has also great news to share about the land in Selden adjacent to the College on College Rd.  He will be proposing this 61 acre lot to be transformed into an active park that could include ball fields (baseball, football, lacrosse…), children’s play equipment, a passive walking park, restrooms and of course leaving green wooded areas for all to enjoy.

 

Our March meeting will sponsor A Parents for Megan's Law organizations parent program.  This program will share information about prevention education, safety tips and red flags to look for to help you educate yourself and your family.  The program runs about two hours and will allow for questions after.  The Selden Civic will be presenting this program free to our Selden Community and Middle Country Community.  If you are bringing a large group please let us know, no RSVP is necessary.

Our speaker last month was John Cortez, sponsor of Wheel Chair basketball and Liason to the Town of Brookhaven for disabled athletes.  John visited our civic and shared all the great events and programs that he and his group are competing in.   There will be a game on March 24 at Newfield High School join the fun or come to watch, a night of competition.

 

I would like to start by wishing everyone a Happy Holiday and a Healthy New Year from all the Selden Civic Board.   We will be starting our new membership drive starting January 1.   If you have not rejoined as a member for the new year, please use our on line application by printing it out and sending it in or just join us at our next meeting on January 16, 7:30pm at the Selden Fire House second floor.    

We welcome our newly elected members to our community.   Thank you and good luck to those that will be leaving us.  A very special thanks to our Brookhaven Councilwoman Gerri Esposito for all you have done to help our community get to where we are now.  Gerri always has put our community needs first and working with us to make our wants happen you have always been there to bring things together you have been a great friend to us.  To John LaValle thank you for believing in our community and our goals and helping to move us forward, you both will be missed.  We must also mention many others in the parks department that with out all your help we would not have our community park and gazebo.  We can not say thanks to you all enough.

We will also be saying goodbye to one of our board members Kathy Walsh as she moves in to her new position as our newly elected Brookhaven Councilwoman.  Best of luck to you in your new adventure and I know that you will do a great job and as you have always been a hard worker in the community and I know you will continue doing the right thing for the residence of Brookhaven.

Our Family Dinner last night was a great success thanks to you the community.  We had so much food donated to our dinner by you the community we had enough to send our attendees home with pot luck boxes of food to take home.  Our menu included turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn bread, baked ziti, a  wide variety of vegetables, salads, and this included desserts cakes, cookies, pies.  We also want to thank all our community that helped serve our attending families.  This event was well attended by about 100 adults and children not to mention about 15 servers.  We also had door prizes that included donations from Staples-- paper shredder and Home Depot-- Bar-B-Q- grill, our donations also include gift certificates from Waldbaum's, King Kullen, Pathmark, Diamond Jewelers and Cafe Amici.  This entire dinner event was completely free to our community and the Selden-Centereach Youth Association community.

AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT OF YOU THE SELDEN COMMUNITY YOUR HEART, DONATION AND COMMITMENT,  MAKE THIS TOWN A GREAT PLACE TO CALL HOME WITH PRIDE!!!!

Please make note that our next meeting will be at the Centereach Fire House, October 27, 7:30pm, we are sharing our "Meet the Candidates Night" again with our neighboring Civic in Centereach.  This format worked well last year and we look forward to a successful night this year.  Please join us and have the opportunity to speak to your elected community and candidates that are newly running for elected seats.  This evening will give you opportunity to ask questions, and hear from these candidates what they stand for and if they have your vision and views.  Let your friends and neighbors know of this evening October 27, 7:30pm.  We look forward to seeing you there!

***********************************************************************************************We are back to start a new year date our meeting date is September 19, 7:30pm, our new location the Selden Fire Department on Woodmere Road behind the Campus Hero off South Evergreen.  If you are unable to attend the meeting please contact us by email at seldencivic@optonline.net.  We look forward to seeing you or just hearing from you to share your ideas or concerns about our community.  Our agenda will include new goals and projects for our up and coming year.  One of our projects this year will be to continue to beautify our Hamlet o

f Selden and the way we would like our community and merchants to look.  We want to bring pride to where we shop, play and live. 

Up date on our 'Movie Night in the Park',  it was a great success!!!  We had about 200 members of our community come down to enjoy our cartoon "Bugs Bunny" and movie "The Incredible's" at the Liberty Park on August 26th, this was a FREE Family Night of FUN for all that participated..   The Selden Civic board also had a great time, popping pop corn, spinning cotton candy and cooking hotdogs.  I want to say a special thank you to our civic board Sandy DiPiazza, Kathy Walsh, Debbie and Peter DeStasio and Dave Felber we could not have been able to service our community without your help and support.

This event was made possible thanks to the generosity of our Legislator-Presiding Officer of Suffolk County Joe Caracappa and the Town of Brookhaven  Councilwoman Geraldine Esposito who has been a great support to our civic, Supervisor John J. LaValle and the Town of Brookhaven Parks Department without the help of our elected person we could not have been able to provide this great event to the community...

We will still be offering our Family Bricks for our Gazebo Walkway.  These bricks will be part of a joint project the town of Brookhaven Councilwoman Gerri Esposito has gifted us some funds that we will be ale to help off set the cost of this project.  If you are interested in purchasing a brick just go to our link and pull down our application form members cost $30. a brick and non-members $40. a brick.

We will have available at our Movie Night for you to purchase a Family Name Brick.  These bricks will be placed to make our walk way at our Selden, Gazebo Park located on the corner of Walgreen's Store in Selden on Middle Country Rd. between Dare Rd and Bicycle Path.  This brick will have engraved your family name or someone you would like to memorialize.  We will have the bricks placed down  at the walk site in the fall.  Don't worry if you are not able to attend our Family Night you will still be able to purchase  our Family Name Brick's with our application that will be on our website or printed in our newsletter.  Look for it in the next few weeks for more information.
