Dear Community,

Our next meeting will be on Monday, May 19th, 7:00pm at the MC Selden Library.    Our April Meeting was dedicated to a presentation of the Middle Country School District Proposed Budget.  This will be presented by the board of education president, Karen Lessler.    We will also be introducing the candidates running for the board of education.

Each year there are three seats to vote in candidates running for the board of education.  This year, Kim Tarpey (vacated seat), Susan Jacobson and Nicholas Caracappa are up for re-election.  The vacated Tarpey seat has two candidates running for the seat; Doreen Feldman and Vincent Zecca.    You will have an opportunity to ask the candidates questions and questions about the proposed budget at our April meeting.

This year, the First Referendum will be the Proposed Budget for the 2008-09 year; $193 million is this year’s budget; the 2007-08 year was $186 million.   This is an expenditure increase of 3.95% and an estimated tax levy increase of 4.89%.  There are no reductions to any programs this year.  Instead the budget will have addition to technology, building co-curricular for secondary schools (middle and High schools), funds for student supplies and furniture replacement.  In addition there will be an enhancement to the elementary curriculum which will be an extended year program.  This will provide extra help for students that are identified by there teachers for a summer school program to give them an educational boost in the fall.

The Second Referendum will be a Bond Referendum for repairs for Bicycle Path Pre-K and Kinder-garden Center.   This Bond will allow the district to relocate the boiler room above the ground due to rising water levels in the basement.   At this present time we have no health issue or concerns; just a constant flooding issue due to the water table rising.  This work will cost $2.1 million.  Due to a return of EXCEL monies provided through the State this project will be little or no cost to the taxpayers depending on reimbursement timeline.   The worse scenario could be a cost of $50-100,000.  Most likely it would cost less or nothing at all.

The Third Referendum will used to purchase buses.  This will allow the district to purchase 15-18 buses as well as upgrading the bus garage, oil tank replacement and installing CNG fueling station.   Cost of the Busing Bond will be in the amount of $3.17 million; this will have no effect to the 2008-09 budget.  Cost will be offset by grant funding and state aid Estimated net cost after grants and aid will be about $11.00 per year to the average home.   Please remember to VOTE!   May 20th if you need information about locations to vote, contact the Middle Country District Clerk 285-8011.
